　　 要说爱情，可真是要人心旷神怡，
Sleepless in Seattle《西雅图不眠夜》中描述的
就是 love is magic.“爱情是一种魔力”。

　　 所以看到perfect marriage，我总艳羡不已。
今天听到一个外教夫妇在讲述他们
love at first sight（一见钟情）的时候，
我是听得聚精会神，他说：


　　　　　　　　 The first time we met I knew she was the
　　　　　　　　 only one that I wanted to marry. And you know,
　　　　　　　　 we've been happy together for almost fifty
　　　　　　　　 years. Yes, it was love from the word go.

　　 这句话的意思我大体上可是明白了，可是其中一句 It was love
from the word go 听起来有点糊涂，“他们的爱是从单词里出来的？”，
结果他又接着说：When we got married my young brother predicted
it would never last, that we weren't right for each other. But
he's certainly had to eat his words.

呵，又来了个eat his words. 不过我琢磨了一下，这个eat one's words
从字面上看就是 “把话给吃掉了”，估计就是“食言”，再听听外教所说：
“我们结婚的时候，我的弟弟说我们的婚姻长不了”。但是现在呢，肯定是
得承认他错了。不错，我很坚信自己对eat one's word的判断；

　　 但是对from the word go 我可是怎么也搞不懂了；不过听完了外教
的解释之后，我才恍然大悟！

　　 在开始赛跑比赛时，从裁判的嘴里发话语（the word）后，选手们
立刻就向前狂奔；所以from the word的意思就是“立刻、马上”；比如
说有位脑清醒的先生，就曾这样说过：

When Mary and I met, I was dazzled. But I learned right away
we had nothing in common. I knew from the word go it wouldn't
work no matter how beautiful she was.

　　原来是“当他和玛丽见面的时候，顿时被她的美丽所迷住。但是很快
发现他们之间没有什么共同之处。所以，一开始他就知道，不管她有多
漂亮，都走不到一起去”。
　　
　　 看来不是每一对都能是“一见钟情”，该放手的时候也还得放手！

用心记忆：
