kitchen-country Country 乡村派

Successful country kitchens convey the warmth of simpler times. Colors range from muted hues to earth tones and bold primaries[1]. Rustic touches such as exposed beams, pine paneling, and exposed bricks are hallmarks of country style.

　　设计成功的乡村厨房表达出简朴年代的温馨。色彩可用度可从哑色到土色调或是鲜明的主色调。乡村风格的润饰如：暴露在外的房梁、松木嵌板以及裸露的砖块是乡村风格的金字招牌。

注释：

1. bold primary：
primary在表达颜色的时候指的是“原色”，即红黄蓝三色。我们知道颜色也有深浅之分，所以现在我们可以推断出来——bold primary指的就是非常明亮、热辣的原色。

Traditional 传统派

More formal than country, traditional style gets its look from fine woods and often ornately detailed cabinets. Rich, deep colors are used to create a mood of refinement and good taste. Traditional style plays up[2] architectural details.

　　传统型的厨房比乡村风格显得更加正式一些，以上等木材为原料，经常配以装饰华丽、构造复杂的橱柜。常用丰富、深沉的色调营造出一种外观精巧、品味上等的氛围。传统型的厨房风格强调建筑上的细节特点。

2. play up：
谁都知道play是“玩耍”的意思，但是英语当中这个词的变化也是相当之多的，正如我们在文中看到的：play up 表达的意思和我们熟知的玩耍相差极大，到底是什么意思呢？先来看看这么一个句子：The newspaper have played up the visit.（报纸对这次访问已经大肆宣扬。）能猜得到play up有“强调、加大……的重要性”的意思吗？

　Painstaking craftsmanship using natural materials is key to Southwestern style. Wood, quarry tile, ceramic tile, and hand-painted fabrics are common elements. Earth tones are predominant background colors, often punctuated by vibrant[3] primary-color accessories.

　　对天然材料的精心制作工艺是西南部厨房风格的关键所在。木材、大铺地砖、瓷砖以及手工绘制的织物是常见的装饰成分。底色主要以土色基调为主，经常以明快的原色（红黄蓝三色）装饰品点缀其间。

3. vibrant：
振动的、响亮的。我们通常说：the vibrant strings（颤动的琴弦）；响亮的嗓音——a vibrant voice；此外vibrant还可以形容“明亮的光线或是鲜明的色彩”，所以文中的vibrant primary color可以理解成“鲜明的原色”。

Contemporary 现代派

　Contemporary kitchens are spare and simple in design. Free of clutter. Sleek surfaces are a hallmark of the style. Marble, glass, stainless steel are frequent here. Background colors often are light and neutral[4], letting bold-color accessories take center stage. Lighting and window treatments tend to be low profile and minimalistic.

　　现代派的厨房设计简易节约。没有混乱的感觉。光滑的表面是现代派厨房的特点。这里最常见的有：大理石、玻璃和不锈钢。背景颜色通常是浅的或是中性的颜色，色泽明亮的装饰品占据了整个布局的中心。灯光、窗户倾向于低调处理，而且风格简约。

4. neutral：
中性的。这个词可以用的地方好象还挺多的——最常见的就是立场、观点中立(a neutral position / view)；常看国际新闻的人对“中立国”( a neutral nation )这个词也是相当熟悉的吧？上文中我们看到的neutral 是用来形容颜色的，那么neutral color当然也指的是和任何颜色都相配的“中性颜色”。

　Eclectic kitchens borrow elements from various sources -- both old and new -- to achieve a pleasing,harmonious mix. Eclectic style often highlights hand-me-down items, second-hand store finds, and other recyclables.

　　折衷风格的厨房从各处采集思路——不论新旧——以求达到赏心悦目、和谐的风格。折衷派的风格常使得半新不旧的东西——二手店里的货物或是其它可重复利用的物品光亮照人。
