Computing in comfort

computer   When setting up a computer workstation, especially at home, we tend to use whatever furniture we have handy. But "making do" may cost you more than it saves in the long run[1], due to decreased productivity and increased medical expenses. The more time you spend in front of the computer, the more important it is to adjust your workstation. Eventually it will fit your body like custom-made clothing[2].

  If you come away from a session at your computer with aching hands or eyes that feel full of sand, you may shrug off your discomforts as an unavoidable consequence of too much time at the keyboard. But the real problem probably isn't the quantity of time you spend at the computer. It's more likely caused by your physical positioning at the computer. Here are some tips[3] on how to arrange yourself and your computing environment for optimum health and comfort.

  Physical proportions vary widely between individuals, yet we sit at mass-produced, one-size-fits-all desks. And like automobile seat belts, they're usually too big for women. Working at a desk that's too high off the floor can lead to all sorts of aches and pains[4], especially in your shoulders and neck. It can also trigger early fatigue and interfere with your ability to concentrate. A desk that's too low can also have physical repercussions, including an aching neck and upper back. If resting your forearms on your desk causes your shoulders to rise upward, the desk is probably too tall. If your knees continually bump[5] against the underside, even when your feet are flat on the floor, it's probably too short.

这个词组可跟跑步没什么关系,表达的是"最后、最终"的意思。

定做的衣服。去商场买衣服,要买着合适的可不是件容易的事。也正是因为这点,裁缝才会有生意!和custom-made 相对的是One-size-fits-all,在英语中它表达"同一尺码适合所有的人"的意思,也就是我们平时生活中说的"均码"。

本身这个词的意思是"顶端、末端",但在这儿它是"指导、秘诀"的意思,赌马的时候如果谁能拿到内幕消息(a tip on the race),那可就稳操胜卷了。

[4]aches and pains:
这两个词都可以表达"痛疼",区别在于:ache强调连续的疼,可结合许多合成词backache / earache / headache / stomachache等;但pain 就只能表示具体某处的痛疼了--She had pains in her back all the time .(她的背部总是痛)。另外,内心的痛苦也是可以用这个词来表达。

computer  当我们安置一个有电脑的工作环境,尤其是在家里的时候,我们好象都倾向于用那些唾手可得的家具。但是这种"应付了事"的方式不但不能帮你省钱, 最终还要花掉你更多的钱----虽然减少了挑选家具时的麻烦,但意味着将来医疗费用的增加。你在电脑前面花的时间越长,调整你的工作环境就越显得重要。改变的结果就是它最终将像定做的衣服一样合身。

  如果刚开完一个电脑会议之后,你有手臂痛疼或是眼睛里像是掺了沙子一样的感觉。你也许会耸耸肩膀认为这必然是敲键盘太久导致的不舒适。但真正的问题可能并不是你在电脑前面花费的时间多少。而更有可能是由于你在电脑前身体姿势的问题。这有几个秘诀可以教会你怎样在最适宜健康以及舒适的前提下安排好你与电脑之间的环境。

  尽管我们大家都是使用那种大批量生产的同一尺码的桌椅,但每个人身体的比例都是有很大区别的。就像汽车座椅的安全带通常对女人来说都太大了。在一张离地面太高的桌子上工作会导致各种各样的痛疼感,尤其是肩膀和脖子这两个位置。而且还能引发早期疲劳症,影响你注意力的集中。书桌太矮同样也会引起身体的反应,这些症状就包括脖子以及上背部的痛疼。如果你将前臂放在书桌上,肩膀处于向上提起的状态,那么你的书桌就很可能太高了。如果你的膝盖总是撞到桌子的下边缘,甚至是当脚是平放在地板上的时候,那你的桌子就很可能是太矮。

 

    [5]bump :
通常这个词表达撞、碰的意思的时候需要跟上介词against / into , 比如说"他在黑暗中撞上墙壁 / 撞在我身上"(He bumped against the wall in the dark.)
