Surrounded by Brothers (2)

插图 Tonio has stopped playing with boys his age who don't want Sam tagging [1] along, explaining, "They called Sam a baby." I cannot punish one without angering the other. "Leave Sam alone," Tonio insolently [2] tells me when I yell at his brother. "You made Tonio cry," Sam scolds me when I get after [3] Tonio.

They go to bed, one in the top bunk [4], the other in the bottom. By morning they are in one bed, curled up around each other like puppies in a box. When one comes into our bed after a nightmare, my wife and I know that before morning his brother will follow.

When Sam used to take long afternoon naps, Tonio would mope around [5] the house until Sam awoke.

Once, I caught him standing by the bed, poking [6] his finger into Sam, whispering, "Sammy, Sammy" trying to wake him up.

注释:

Three stangers tagged themselves on to us(三个陌生人尾随着我们)。

In nursery school, Toino would hold Sam's hand and walk him to class before running into his own. When Tonio's classmates filed out to go to the playground, Sam would grin, and the boys would wave.

I don't know what kind of relationship they will have when they grow up. Parents always want their children to have what they never could. I want them always to have each other. So I imagine them going to the same college, marrying sisters and living on the same block.

Sitting just out of the way, I often watch them, imagining what my own brother would have been like. I feel foolish, getting deeper into middle age, conjuring up [7] an imaginary playmate, but my sons show me what could have been. That must be why I had dreaded the day that I would lose something too.

You'll have to get after him to water the flowers(你要敦促他给花浇水)。Mother got after him for staying out overnight(妈妈责备他彻夜不归)。

He moped in the house all day.(他整天无精打采地在房间里走来走去)。

He poked me in the rib with his finger.(他用指尖戳了戳我的肋骨)。

7. Conjure up:“想象出”的意思,如:to conjure up pictures of fatastic machines(想象出一些奇异机器的图样)。
