迈克尔·道格拉斯与凯瑟琳·泽坦·琼丝Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones are getting married. The 55-year-old actor finally popped the question to his 30-year-old girlfriend on New Year's Eve.

It was a mere two hours into the new millennium[1] that Douglas asked Zeta-Jones to be his wife. The setting was Douglas' home in the Rocky Mountains. On his official Web site (www.michaeldouglas.com), the actor says, "I am very happy to announce that I am engaged to Catherine Zeta-Jones." Michael obtained a divorce from his estranged wife of 22 years, Diandra, late last year, according to the New York Post, freeing him to marry again.

Douglas also put in a call to his dad, Kirk, to tell him the good news. "No one is going to look at the ring" the father told his son, "-she is so beautiful herself."

According to columnist Jeannie Williams, that ring, a 1920s antique[2]. It's a 10-carat diamond surrounded by 28 smaller stones.

The couple has been fielding[3] answers about a possible engagement ever since they went public with their romance. They met at the French Deauville Film Festival in August 1998 and have been dating since March 1999. Gossipmongers had predicted an engagement announcement when the two celebrated their joint birthday, Sept. 25, together.

At the time, even Douglas' father was quizzed about the impending[4] nuptials, to which he replied, "I'd marry her myself, but my wife won't let me."

The just-engaged couple say they'll wed sometime this year. BBC Online speculates that the two may opt to[5] exchange vows in Zeta-Jones' hometown of Mumbles, South Wales. The Welsh actress's father, Dai, who now helps manage his daughter's career, declined to comment on the possibility of a Wales wedding.

On the career front, Douglas is preparing for the premiere of his latest film, The Wonder Boys, from L.A. Confidential director Curtis Hanson, while Zeta-Jones will soon start filming Beyond Borders with Kevin Costner.
