Tom Cruise jumped at[1] the chance to play a sleazy sex guru in Magnolia, the new ensemble[2] piece from Boogie Nights director P.T. Anderson.

After the critical acclaim of his porn[3] opus Boogie Nights, Paul Thomas Anderson intended to make "something light and quick and cheap." Instead, he wrote and directed a $25 million epic of psychological and physical collapse, an ode to emotional reconnection, with the three hours-plus Magnolia, which opened in December but expands across the country today.

By his third feature, the 29-year-old auteur[4] (who has shortened his billing to P.T. Anderson) has a regular stable of actors: Julianne Moore and William H. Macy from Boogie Nights and John C. Reilly and Philip Baker Hall, who've been in all of Anderson's films. But the real casting coup[5] was enlisting Tom Cruise, one of the biggest stars anywhere, for a small but custom-written[6] role of a TV sex guru.

The germ[7] came about when the two met while Cruise was still shooting Eyes Wide Shut. Recalls Anderson, "I said, 'We should work together,' and I called him when I'd finished the script eight months later, and he was just finishing Eyes. And he loved [the script]."

Magnolia, like Boogie Nights, is set in the non-trendy San Fernando Valley where Anderson grew up and is very much about fathers and sons: Cruise's character is estranged from[8] his dying father (Jason Robards); a genius quiz show kid is used and ignored by his dad; and William H. Macy plays a forlorn former quiz show kid, an adult-child adrift without a mentor[9].
