Streisand Stalked

Barbra StreisandIn another celebrity[1] scare, a Malibu resident who appeared to be stalking[2] neighbor Barbra Streisand and her husband, James Brolin, was apprehended by police but was ultimately released and not charged.

The man, a 28-year-old photographer was arrested under suspicion of stalking and held on $1 million bail after he allegedly[3] followed Streisand and Brolin twice while they were driving Saturday.

The celebrity took no chances[4] and got police help each time, first driving to a Los Angeles County Sheriff's station when they spotted a van following them along Highway 101. When the van showed up behind them again on Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu, they flagged down[5] a deputy, who stopped the driver.

Prosecutors eventually decided not to file charges against[6] Wendell Wall, 28, citing a lack of evidence of "credible threat." In his write-up of the incident, Deputy District Attorney Martin L. Herscovitz wrote that there was "no recent or credible threat made, but (victims) are fearful." He also noted that Streisand and Brolin were "non-desirous of prosecution" of Wall.

The supposed stalker actually had supporters who showed up at the Malibu courthouse this morning, holding picket signs and chanting "Free Wendell."

His father told reporters outside the courthouse that he may file a lawsuit over the ordeal. The elder Wall claims his son's arrest was "political," designed to get back at him. He says he used to work for Streisand, which she denies, as a decorator until they had a falling out[7].

It wasn't the first incident, according to Herscovitz's report, which states that Wall had followed the celebrity couple "over (the) last months... to get photos."

Yesterday the Brolins released a statement saying that they have been "repeatedly pursued by Mr. Wall over the past five years." The statement also said, "It has become even more ominous ... because of the fact that Mr. Wall resides on their street. They are essentially prisoners in their own home."

注释

1. Celebrity

2. stalk
He turned and stalked away.

3. allegedly
This is allegedly the case.

4. take no chances
Chance的其他常用短语还有:take a chance(或take chances) 冒险、投机;take one's chance 碰运气,准备冒险;by chance 偶然,也许。

5. flag down

6. file charges against

7. falling out
