Golden Globe Night

Denzel Washington　　The Hollywood Foreign Press Association's 57th annual Golden Globe Awards were presented on Jan. 23.
　　Only American Beauty, The Sopranos, and HBO amassed more than one win, while some odds-on[1] favorites, such as The Insider and The Talented Mr. Ripley, went home empty-handed.
　　The dark suburban satire American Beauty won a best drama picture award, with Sam Mendes and Alan Ball taking home best director and best screenplay awards, respectively.
　　The animated Disney-Pixar film Toy Story 2 was the best comedy picture, leaving critic John Malkovich in the dust[2]. Denzel Washington took best dramatic acting honors for The Hurricane, beating Beauty's Kevin Spacey.

Hilary Swank　　Hilary Swank bettered[3] her Oscar odds by taking home the best dramatic actress honors.
　　Tom Cruise took the best supporting Globe home for his role as a sleazy sex guru in the indie film, while Angelina Jolie won her third Golden Globe award in a row, for her role as a sociopathic[4] mental patient in Girl, Interrupted.
　　Jim Carrey took home this year's best actor in a musical or comedy award for his turn as abrasive comedian Andy Kaufman in Man on the Moon.
　　British actress Janet McTeer won best actress in a comedy or musical for her role in Tumbleweeds.Tom Cruise and his sister-in-law
　　Snubbed[5] by the Emmys, HBO's The Sopranos finally got the respect they deserved. The buzz-heavy show, which launched its second season last week, scored wins for James Gandolfini, Edie Falco, and Nancy Marchand.
　　Sex and the City, another limited-run series on HBO, won best comedy. Sex star Sarah Jessica Parker won best actress in a comedy series.
　　Michael J. Fox got a standing ovation[6] from the room as he accepted his third consecutive Golden Globe for Spin City.

注释：

1. odds-on：这是一个复合形容词，是“（比赛中）很可能获胜的”，就是“胜算很大、有把握”的意思。例如：an odds-on bet就是有把握的打赌。另外odds-on还可以做名词，是“优势、良机”的意思。

2. in the dust：这个短语有两个意思，一个就是真的在dust泥土中——死去，例如He has been in the dust for years. 他已经死了好几年了。另一个意思是形容受到污辱、嘲讽，灰头土脸的样子，在本文中就是这个意思。

3. bettered：better做形容词和副词非常常见，但做动词的时候可不多，比如本文中，better做动词表示“超过、胜过”。记住这种用法了吗？不妨试试。

6. a standing ovation：ovation means warmly applause, 热烈的鼓掌欢迎，大声欢呼。A standing ovation常常出现在音乐会、晚会等社交场合，当人们觉得仅仅鼓掌不足以表达尊敬、赞美等感情时，人们常不约而同地以起立、长时间鼓掌喝采来表示欢迎。
