1500-1920 The Origins of Country Music
Storytelling
through song was a tradition which began in the Middle Ages as a way for
people to pass on their history through generations. These Old World "old
" songs were brought over[1] to America by the first British settlers
and, over time, the New World became the backdrop for these tales of hardship
and heartache. By the early 1900s, the seeds had been planted for "mountain
music" (aka "string hand") to grow out of its local origins into what
would soon be popularized at the Grand Ole Opry.
