Aguilera1Of the many fledgling celebrities spawned in recent years by the Disney Channel, none surpasses Christina Aguilera in terms of [1] vocal gifts and sheer star power. A singer of startling range and maturity - she's already drawn comparisons to Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, and even Etta James. Unlike most artists, Aguilera has the potential to garner fans and audiences far outside her peer group.

Born December 18,1980, in Staten Island, New York, Aguilera knew even as a pre-schooler that she wanted to be a performer. By the time she was five, she had learned to sing all the songs from The Sound of Music. At age ten, Aguilera tried out[2] at an open audition staged in Pittsburgh by the New Mickey Mouse Club. Aguilera got the job, and soon she found herself singing, dancing, and acting alongside fellow Mouse recruits Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake and JC Chasez (of 'N Sync).

Aguilera2During her tenure as a Mouseketeer, esteemed celebrity manager Steve Kurtz sent the recording of a demo tape to RCA executive Ron Fair. Smitten with Aguilera's "amazing voice and budding[3] beauty," Fair decided to offer the 15-year-old a record deal. "Reflection," the lead song on the soundtrack for the animated film, Mulan, which was sang by Aguilera ascended the pop charts, and the following year (1998) the song was nominated for both an Alma award and a Golden Globe award (for Best Original Song in a Motion Picture).

The single, "Genie in a Bottle," which was issued on June 22 rose to No. 1 on the pop charts (selling nearly 500,000 copies) within a month of its release, and the accompanying video became the fourth-most-requested on MTV's Total Request Live.

Released on August 24, Aguilera's full-length recording debut, the self-titled Christina Aguilera, fulfilled everyone's expectations. Critics praised Aguilera for the elasticity[4] of her voice, and for her assuredness with various musical styles, while the record-buying public sent sales of the CD soaring straight to No. 1, with over 250,000 copies sold in its first week of release.
