(1920s) Radio, Records and the Birth of
Country
The
proliferation of radio in the 1920's spawned an interest in what is now
referred to as "old-time," an instrumental style which used the fiddle
as the primary melodic voice. Live[1], on-air[2] performances
of the music soon became popular, and foremost among these shows was WSM's
"Grand Old Opry" in Nashville. These live boradcasts, coupled with the
expansion of the recording industry, helped create a national audience
for the music that was down to earth.
Noteworthy Artists include:
Vernon Dalhart
Uncle Jimmy Thompson
Deford Bailey
The Fruit Jar Drinkers
Riley Puckett
Uncle Dave Macon
Fiddlin' John Carson
The Clod Hoppers
The Bronco Busters
The Gully Jumpers
The Skillet Lickers
