Canada's commercial seal hunt has been a source of debate
for over thirty years, but few people have ever witnessed the
hunt as it happens or evaluated fundamental data about seals
and sealing.

Today's Entry: Friday, March 31, 2000 The Hunt
Begins (2)
How close is the sealing vessel to her when she is shot? How easy
is it for the hunter to hop off his boat, make his way across the broken-up
pans to collect her? Will the hunter pass her by to get another seal before
coming back for her?
Will he club her on the head and ensure that she is dead when
he does reach her - or will he hook her through the skull like a fish
and drag her back to the boat on his hakapik while she is still alive?
Those of us who advocate an end to this grisly business are frequently
met with a series of pat arguments from those who defend the hunt. One
of the most common is that this hunt is no crueler than other hunts, or
that it is no different than the way that animals that are raised domestically
for food are killed. Without commenting here on other hunts or the practices
inside slaughterhouses, I'll tell you with utter confidence that this
hunt is very different. The conditions under which the animals are hunted
make it different. The level of activity required in order to make a buck
at it makes it different, as sealers scramble from pan to pan, trying
to kill as many animals as possible as quickly as possible. The fact that
it happens in virtual secrecy makes it different. The fact that hunters
will violate what slim regulations do exist with almost certain impunity
as the government refuses to adequately monitor and enforce it makes it
different.
Speaking personally, the tremendous sense of tragedy, sadness
and shame that I feel when I bear witness to the ritual disrespect and
cruelty visited on these creatures is also singular. I do believe that
this hunt is unsustainable and that it will never be economically viable,
but it is the differences described above that strike me most at this
time of year.
