Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat met with President Clinton twice
today in what Palestinians called a last shot for a Mideast peace deal before
Clinton leaves office on Jan. 20. Hours after arriving in Washington, Arafat met with the U.S. president to clarify details of Clinton’s proposals to break a stalemate in the hunt for peace between Palestinians and Israelis, despite doubts from both sides that any agreement was on the horizon. The meeting came as violence continued to rock the region: on Monday, a car bombing rocked the Israeli coastal city of Netanya, injuring at least 54, including the suspected bomber. In the Gaza Strip today, a Palestinian man was killed and seven were wounded by Israeli troops in two separate shootings, and two Israeli soldiers were hurt by roadside bombs detonated near two Jewish settlements. Clinton and Arafat resumed their talks late today after taking a nearly five-hour dinner break. |
