Space shuttle Endeavour and its crew of five returned to Earth in
triumph today, ending NASA’s most difficult space-station construction
mission yet. “Outstanding job. Welcome back,” Mission Control told Endeavour’s commander, Brent Jett Jr., once the shuttle came to a safe stop on the illuminated runway. Nearing the end of their 11-day mission, the shuttle crew on Sunday reflected on successfully completing its objective: outfitting space station Alpha with solar wings spreading 240 feet from tip to tip. “I’m in the pure joy mode right now,” astronaut Joe Tanner said from Endeavour. He and spacewalking partner Carlos Noriega installed the solar wings last week, then went back out to make an unexpected repair on a wing that was too slack. The astronauts also spent one day inside Alpha, helping commander Bill Shepherd and his two Russian crewmates with computer problems and cargo transfers. |
