Russia will slash its armed forces by 600,000 troops in the next five years, rendering the country unable to wage large-scale war until 2010, a national security spokesman said today.
　　The Kremlin’s Security Council ended months of acrimonious debate on Thursday and backed cuts of some 600,000 people over five years.
　　President Vladimir Putin is expected formally to approve them soon. Laws, orders or decrees should then follow.
