(Review: Last chapter Jesus had washed the dust from
the feet of each of his disciples before supper. )
While eating, Jesus said that one of those eating with him would
betray him, would turn against him and help his enemies. His disciples
asked, "Who?" To answer this, but mainly to show love and special favor
to Judas, Jesus gave him a sop[1], a piece of bread that had been
dipped into a dish. Jesus then told Judas to go and quickly do what he was about
to do.
Since Judas kept the bag that held the money for the group, the
other disciples thought Jesus was telling Judas to buy something or to
give something to the poor. So in English, to say that a person "Keeps the bag" may mean
that he's a thief, who, like Judas, steals money that he's supposed to
be keeping for others.
After Judas left the room, Jesus served some of the bread and
wine to the remaining eleven men, telling them that it was his body
and blood[2] which he was giving for them. He said they were to remember him every time they ate the bread
and drank the wine in this way.
They left the room and went up a hill to a garden named Gethsemane[3].
There Jesus prayed, with great inward sorrow and pain because he was about
to die a horribly painful death[4] for the sins of the world.
