Good Friday (3)

(Review: Last chapter after Jesus and his eleven disciples had supper, they went up a hill to a garden named Gethsemane.)

esus was crucified. Since Jesus often went to the Garden of Gethsemane, it was there that Judas brought soldiers to capture him. To identify which of the men they should take, Judas kissed Jesus. Then Jesus asked Judas, "Are you betraying me with a kiss?" So in English "a Judas' kiss" is a pretended show of love which is for the purpose of hurting the other person.
From the garden the soldiers led Jesus first to one group of officials and then to some others. The Jewish religious and political leaders wanted Jesus killed, but only the Romans could legally give that order.[1] The leaders encouraged some of the onlookers to shout, "Crucify him! Crucify him!" -meaning that Jesus should be killed the Roman way by being nailed to a wood cross and there left until he died.
The Roman governor Pontius Pilate said that even though some Jews had said that Jesus was the king of the Jews, he had done nothing to death[2]. So, Pilate had the soldiers beat Jesus, and a crown made of thorns was pushed down on his head. Then Pilate prepared to release Jesus, but someone shouted that if he let him go, he would be helping an enemy of the Roman Emperor.
Then Pilate[3] took a basin of water, and washed his hands in front of the mob, saying that he was innocent of this man's blood. They were responsible for Jesus' death. So in English, "to wash your hands of a matter" means to refuse to make a decision or take responsibility when you should.

注释:

1. The Jewish religious... give that order.:这里的leaders指的是当时耶路撒冷的首领(居民主要是犹太人),当时耶路撒冷正处于罗马帝国的统治下,所以处死耶酥要有罗马帝国的同意才行。

2. do nothing to death:没有做伤天害理的事情。
