INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION

INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATIONWhen the station is completed, around the end of 2003 if NASA[1] sticks to its schedule, it will be a multi-room hotel and research facility seven, with the mix shifting as Americans, Russians, Europeans, and Japanese move in and out over the months and years. By the time, resupply and assembly flights by shuttles or Russian rockets will have become so routine that today's breathtaking series of space rendezvous[2] is certain to become tomorrow's humdrum.

You'll know the ISS[3] is there. Five times the size of[4] the Russian space station Mir, it will have solar wings and radiators sprouting from trusses spanning 356 feet. Its central core will be a collection of motorhome-size labs, living quarters, and supply canisters plugged together like a supersize lego set[5]. Together they'll full a fore-to-aft length of 290 feet, almost as long as a football field.

The final configuration, requiring 45 separate space launches over at least six years and many long days of spacewalks by astronaut construction workers, will track diamond-bright across the night sky. Only the moon and Venus will be bigger and more visible.

注释:

[1]NASA:(abbr.)National Aeronautics and Space Administration 它成立于1958年10月1日,其前身是NACA(National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics)。

[2]rendezvous:(n.)(place decided upon for a ) meeting at a time agreed upon.

[3]ISS:(abbr.)International Space Station

[4]Five times the size of …:
此 类句型共三个:① 倍数 + as + adj.+ as …;② 倍数 +the+ n.+ of…(如文中 所示)③ 倍数+比较级+than。如,This watch is three times as expensive as that one.(这只表是那只表的三倍价钱那么贵。) This watch is three times more expensive than that one.

1934年改用现名:LEGO(来自丹麦文 'LEg Godt'),意思是'Play Well';而拉丁文则有' I study' ,'I put together' 的含义。
