IOC tries to end a year of scandal at board meeting:
AS Roma acquired Japanese football star Hidetoshi Nakata from fellow Serie A[1] club Perugia on Thursday January 13 for cash and two players. Perugia official Ilvano Ercoli said his club will receive two midfielders from Roma, Russian international Dmitry Alenichev and Manuele Blasi, but he would not reveal how much money was involved. Published reports put the figure at about 32 billion lire[2] (US$17 million). Nakata, 22, is expected to make his Roma debut[3] on Sunday at Olympic Stadium against Verona. The deal had been in the works[4] for some time, but was not concluded until Roma owner Franco Sensi and Perugia counterpart Luciano Gaucci met face-to-face on Thursday. A member of Japan's 1998 World Cup team, Nakata signed a five-year contract with Perugia later that year, becoming only the second player from his country in Serie A. |

He scored twice this season for an inconsistent Perugia, which has dropped to 12th in the 18-team standings. Roma coach Fabio Capello will have to find a way to play Nakata alongside star forward Francesco Totti, who has a similar creative style -- and last week publicly balked at[6] the idea of fourth-place Roma acquiring Nakata. Roma's fans had already rallied around Nakata, and a local radio talk show opened one broadcast by playing the Japanese national anthem. Roma could cash in[7] on television rights[8] from Nakata's star power in Japan.
