Waking from the Dream
With the exception of the college kid, Christian Laettner (given
a spot on the team as reward for his sublime season with national
champion Duke), Michael Jordan, Patrick Ewing, David
Robinson, Charles Barkley, Karl Malone, John Stockton, Scottie Pippen,
Clyde Drexler and Chris Mullin. As they came together there in Portland
for the Tournament of the Americas, you could already sense what was upon
us by the frenzied hordes that had gathered on Portland's downtown
streets outside the Dream Team's hotel. This sort of delirium was
once reserved only for rock stars and entertainers, but this was the '90s,
and pro athletes had become our new icons, complete with police barricades
and screaming, wide-eyed kids aching for even the briefest star sighting. They were the first of a generation.
What had begun in the early '80s with, by comparison, a mere trickle
of celebrity by Bird and Magic, would fairly explode in the '90s with
the growth of this shock troop of dazzling crossover talent.
