The 2002 FIFA World Cup in Japan and Korea will feature a totally
new type of official mascot[1], based upon futuristic computer
animation[2].
In a departure from the traditional single cartoon character,
FIFA and the World Cup Organizing Committees in Japan and Korea have unveiled[3]
a brief animation whose main heroes are intended to become the popular
face of the tournament in 2002.
The comic fantasy presents a family of little creatures who set
out to help create a special atmosphere at the World Cup finals, and recounts[4]
the adventures of two mischievous[5] space-age youngsters on their
way to the matches in Korea and Japan. State-of-the-art[6] computer animation is being used in the
film and the characters will almost always appear as three-dimensional
figures.
The innovative approach was devised by FIFA and the two Organizing
Committees, KOWOC and JAWOC, together with FIFA's marketing partner, ISL
Worldwide, and the brand agency, Interbrand.
The Head of ISL's Events Division, Glen Kirton, said: "The 2002
FIFA World Cup is a ground-breaking event, as it's the first FIFA World
Cup of the new millennium, the first to be held in Asia and the first
to be co-hosted. We needed a ground-breaking approach. Past mascots have been
two-dimensional in both character and presentation, but we wanted to be
more creative and to use the best technology available to reflect the
values of the host countries. After all, Korea and Japan have a world-wide
reputation for innovation."
The Chairman of KOWOC, Dr. She-Jik Park, and his Japanese counterpart,
Mr Shoh Nasu, explained how the idea had developed. "Many possible story ideas were generated by creative teams in
Korea and Japan, before the final one was selected by KOWOC, JAWOC and
FIFA". "Mascots for our events have evolved over the years but this
is a giant leap into the future[7] of staging our biggest event.
The new approach will help communicate the values of the World Cup
to everyone[8], especially children.
The film is only the start. The story will develop over the next
two years running up to the event. It is hoped that the end result will
contribute to full stadiums, with a fabulous[9] atmosphere at all
64 matches.
