Elian Gonzalez's grandmothers left Miami this evening without visiting their 6-year-old grandson because of a dispute over where the meeting was to take place. The women, who arrived in Miami this afternoon, had wanted to visit Elian at a neutral location. The Cuban-American relatives with whom Elian has been staying for the last two months had invited maternal grandmother Raquel Rodriguez and paternal grandmother Mariela Quintana to dinner at their Little Havana home, saying they wanted the grandmothers to see how the boy was doing in his new environment. But as evening turned into night, the impasse continued, with the Miami family eating without the grandmothers. After waiting five hours at an airport facility about 15 miles away, the women flew to Washington, where they were scheduled to meet Tuesday with several members of Congress. |
