Coda, were trapped in a flash flood when their owner's car slid off
a dirt road into the overflowing Santa Fe River. In North Carolina,
thousands of pets perished in the wake of Hurricane Floyed, and many
more would have died had it not been for the efforts of the Emergency
Animal Rescue Service.

Twenty-four years of resentment between
Indonesia and East Timor boiled over on August 30 after nearly 80
percent of the tiny territory's electorate voted for independence.
The world's fourth-largest nation has occupied the former Portuguese
colony, located on an island in the Indonesian archipelago, since
1975. Anti-independence militias, backed by some indonesian military
officers, went on a bloody rampage, kiling thousands, torching homes
and terrorizing unarmed civilians like these in the capital city of
Dili.
