Israeli and Palestinian leaders have begun several days of talks with
President Clinton at a make-or-break summit in the US aimed at overcoming
the obstacles to a final peace settlement.
Initial talks between Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak
and Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat went ahead in a "good atmosphere"
at the Camp David retreat, according to White House spokesman
Joe Lockhart.
He said the two Middle East leaders and Mr Clinton met for about 30
minutes to begin tackling issues that have troubled negotiators for decades,
including the status of Jerusalem, the borders of a Palestinian state,
the future of Jewish settlers in the West Bank and Gaza
Strip, and the fate of Palestinian refugees.
