Clinton is putting pressure on the leaders to reach a deal

A senior Israeli official has said that the prime minister, Ehud Barak,
is not hopeful of achieving a deal at the Middle East peace summit before
President Clinton's scheduled departure on Wednesday for Japan.
With the deadline looming, President Clinton is reported
to be putting pressure on both Mr Barak and the Palestinian leader, Yasser
Arafat, to agree a deal.
The United States is pushing for a single comprehensive
settlement to resolve all outstanding issues, including the establishment
of a Palestinian state, the future of Palestinian refugees and the sovereignty
of Jerusalem.
But as the talks entered their seventh day, Mr Burg said the two sides
"had never been so far apart" on these key issues, which also include
the status of Jewish settlements in the West Bank and Gaza
strip.
