Russian rescuers in the Arctic have failed to dock a capsule
to the stricken
Kursk nuclear submarine lying at the bottom of the Barents Sea with more
than 100 sailors on board.
Russian Northern Fleet officials said the rescue craft had failed to
connect to an escape hatch on the submarine because of continuing
stormy weather.
A second attempt to lower a rescue capsule to the vessel began at 1700
GMT, two hours after the first try, the officials told the Itar-Tass news
agency.
The craft used is reported to be a pressurised diving bell which is
first clamped onto the submarine, then slowly raised to
the surface. It can only carry up to 20 people at a time, and would take
about seven hours to resurface.
