Stormy times ahead for delegates seeking ceasefire
|
The main players in the Middle East crisis have begun emergency talks
in Egypt aimed at halting the slide towards war in the region.
Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak, Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat
and US President Bill Clinton have started a crucial summit in the resort
of Sharm el-Sheikh, which is seen as a last-ditch attempt
to put an end to the violence in which more than 100 people - most of
them Arabs - have died.
UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan said the talks could not be allowed
to fail, but there are widespread concerns that it will
not prove possible to find common ground between the two sides.
